SHAMANIC JOURNEY, 4min., UK
Directed by Julian Konczak
Shamanic Journey is a collaboration between filmmaker Julian Konczak and choreographer Sapphire Sumpter. The film incorporates ancient sites and the wildness of the West Penwith landscape with a choreographed dance sequence unfolding across underground caves and wide-open heaths. The camera remains static, allowing the performance to portray transitions into the archetypal spaces of shamanic journeying – the upper world and lower worlds of compassionate spirits that reveal elements of the soul to the self. The film draws on a distinct visual style that evokes the existence of the soul within multiple worlds and the magical properties of the elements.

THE BALLOON THAT CAN FLY, 1min., USA
Directed by Kimisa H.
For her BFA graduate collection, designer Yuki Xu created unique three-dimensional textiles that boldly pushes the envelope of conventional knitwear. To create these knits, Xu combined shiny, recycled plastic fibers and two-plied contrasting Mouliné with Elastomeric yarns; the synthetic fabrics gives nods to the domestic knitting machine’s automated jacquard punch card mechanism, a foremother to early prototypical computing hardware. Collaborating with director Kimisa H. for this short film, Xu orchestrates a series of playful movements: a visual cacophony of bulbous forms and geometric shapes.

The girl is initially a perfect e-pet who enjoys attention and appreciation, but is not overly dependent. Its main psychological activities include a desire for recognition and praise from others, as well as pride and confidence in its appearance and image. As the protagonist becomes more and more addicted to material desires, it begins to become more and more dependent on the comments of others for fulfillment. Its pursuit of material things becomes more intense, and it begins to do whatever it takes to obtain more material wealth and luxuries, ultimately being consumed by the darkness step by step until it disappears…
