FLASHBULB MEMORIES, 4min., Portugal
Directed by Carlos Trindade
The title of the movie refers to a term introduced in scientific literature (1977) by the american psychologists Roger Brown and James Kulik, in a pioneering study about the relationship of memory with the emotions. The term appeared by analogy with photography, and with it the authors referred to the memories concerning the circumstances in which a person became aware for the first time of an very unexpected event, even shocking – both personal as well as fraternal -, with relevant consequences for her, arousing in any case strong emotions. After have been established, “flashbulb memories” would be practically permanent, because of the extremely vivid memories triggered by the occurrence that gave rise to them.

BUTTERFLY MANEUVERS, 7min., Germany
Directed by Gor Margaryan
Butterfly Manoeuvres’ is an experimental essay film based on old, private film footage of fighter planes. The film documents the preparations and training for war, recorded as historical evidence. An artful fusion of images and sounds creates a unique cinematic experience. It is interesting to note that the soundtrack does not always correspond exactly with the visual impressions. This deliberate discrepancy between image and sound was chosen to create new associations and perspectives. A central motif of the film is the contrast between the destructive fighter planes and the fragile, seemingly lost images of butterflies. This juxtaposition symbolises the transience and irreversible destruction caused by war. ‘Butterfly Manoeuvres’ is therefore not only a documentary record, but also a profound reflection on war, loss and the fleeting beauty of life.’

ALPHA HOUSE – MICHAEL FRANKLIN: CAUGHT IN A WEB OF LIES, 19min., Canada
Directed by Tim Lopers

LINOLEUM – Alain Chamfort / Cie Niki Noves, 6min., France
Directed by Niki Noves
In a dark room, we find two men forehead to forehead, sitting on the floor, heads connected by a helmet with an organic look. They are surrounded by silhouettes motionless and tense. In parallel in a sanitized white space, these two men face each other at a distance. They seem to have the power to influence the behavior of the other. Their violent and fierce manipulations quickly blow them to the limit of the knockout. This struggle has the effect of animating the individuals around them in the dark space. Alain Chamfort is the link between these two spaces. He is the witness and the narrator. He walks in the dark towards a ray of light. In the air there are particles that gradually draw a yellow landscape, a chaotic exterior that indicates a post-apocalyptic era. A child appears in the distance through the yellowish fog. He walks in the midst of a group of women and men of all ages walking in the same direction, looking out at the horizon of a new land.
