This was a showcase of 14 of the best Experimental Films in the world today. The theme of the April 2018 Experimental Film Festival was “Attachment”

Funny story about this festival event. It was the first non-sellout in over 50 FEEDBACK Film Festival events in Toronto. A very bad ice storm hit most of Eastern Canada and the United States the day before and navigating through it to get to a destination was…let’s just say, very hard. Not to mention many people were without power.

The show had to go on and the festival took place with an audience of over half the capacity. A grand achievement. This was an audience who LOVES experimental films and it was an honor to have them all.

For the filmmakers that films were showcased at this festival – your audience feedback is from your core audience. These people came to this festival during one of the biggest storms Toronto has seen in years. Even the Toronto Blue Jays baseball game had to be cancelled this night – and they play in a dome stadium!

The show went on and it turned out to be the best event so far in 2018.

The MVP of the night was the entire FEEDBACK Film Festival team. All the camera operators. Volunteers. And Festival Directors Mary Cox & Kierston Drier (who also served as the moderator of the evening). Bravo!

See you at the festivals.

Short Film: THE LONGING RITUAL, 4min., USA, Experimental/Animation

Longing ritual 1Most recently, in my latest series The Longing Ritual the focus has been on the nature/culture continuum, in particular the search for real experience and a connection to the natural world. By using imagery from various personal rituals connected to cycles of repetitive behavior; the work represents a synthetic place where barriers interfere with direct experience. Photography, film, now virtual worlds are often the substitute and have become the closest we can get to the real thing. My work is meant to mimic this phenomenon. I am deeply interested in how as a culture we see through these different lenses including photography, film and the digital device. Because my imagery is either invented, altered, and or taken out of its original context, it then functions in a realm that is not solely dependent on its connection to language. So, although the work is grounded in place, the experience for the audience is more ephemeral. It is linked to the nature of memory and how we construct meaning and identity from our personal and cultural history and how it gets embedded through the natural and built environment. I create worlds in which altered fragments from my existing landscape are pieced together. These territories then become activated and foster a dialogue between different sequences which produce a nonlinear, poetic narrative.
